At the Margaret Mills Cubbage Child Development Center, part of Greenville Technical College in Greenville, South Carolina, play is more than just fun—it's a vital part of early learning. That’s why the center recently upgraded their outdoor spaces with a thoughtfully designed collection of playgrounds and freestanding play equipment that supports developmental growth at every stage.

Three Unique Play Areas for Three Stages of Development

To meet the needs of children in various age groups, the center divided its playground into three separate zones:

  • Two play areas are designed specifically for children ages 2 to 5, with age-appropriate structures that support exploration, movement, and imaginative play.

  • A third area is reserved for children ages 6 to 23 months, offering a safe, enriching environment for infants and young toddlers who are just beginning to crawl, walk, and engage with the world around them.

Each space was created with purpose and care, ensuring that every child has access to the kinds of play that support their cognitive, social, and physical development.

Engaging Structures and Freestanding Features

In total, the center purchased five playground structures, each selected to promote a variety of learning experiences. To further enhance play opportunities, the outdoor areas also feature several freestanding elements, including:

  • A rescue boat dramatic play vehicle that encourages role play and storytelling.

  • Faux log stumps, which bring a natural, tactile element to the play space and can be used for climbing, balancing, or imaginative adventures.

The play area for the youngest children features sensory-rich equipment designed just for their stage of development, including our Trike Track and two Discovery Centers. These elements help promote language development, fine motor skills, and early interaction in a safe and stimulating environment.

A Natural Look to Match the Center’s Vision

To blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, the center selected a natural color scheme of greens, beiges, and burgundy. The result is a calm and inviting aesthetic that feels warm and welcoming—perfect for a space designed to nurture young learners.

A Campus Investment in Learning Through Play

The new playgrounds at the Margaret Mills Cubbage Child Development Center reflect a deep understanding of how play supports development, especially in the earliest years of life. By investing in separate spaces tailored to different age groups and choosing equipment that combines fun with function, Greenville Technical College has created an outdoor learning environment that supports the whole child—physically, emotionally, and cognitively.

It’s a space where children can grow, explore, and discover every single day.
